The ASPIN Opioid Workforce Expansion Program trains 70 Certified Community Health Workers annually for three years, with a new specialty designation in Substance Use Disorder -Opioid Use Disorder treatment. The target for this program is: Paraprofessional students already working in the healthcare field who wish to improve their skill set to address the opioid crisis in Indiana via in service training and students entering the health care field who wish to learn the skills necessary to help address the opioid crisis in Indiana. Students will attend the State of Indiana, certified 40 hour Certified Community Health Worker core online training program. The Student will then receive an additional 12+ hours online addictions related training

Some of the topics to be developed will include; An overview of The Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP), The CHW role in Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT), Social Determinants of Health Effects on Addiction, Naloxone Administration, Multi-generational problems affecting the Opioid Crisis, and Opioid Treatment Options.

Email Whitelist Procedure

This training program addresses the opioid crisis in 10 Indiana rural counties: Huntington, Kosciusko, Marshall, Marion, Putnam, Sullivan, Decatur, Henry, Jefferson, and Howard. These counties were chosen because nine are designated health professional shortage areas, six are medically under-served areas, and three are medically under-served populations. These nine counties averaged only five certified CHWs, with two counties having zero certified CHWs. In 2017 there were 294 fatal opioid deaths, 2,593 non-fatal ER opioid visits and 1,774 consumers screened for OUD in these counties.

Field Placements/Job Credit
The students will then either enter placements, in-service training, or be evaluated for appropriate job credit. Experiential sites placements will consist of eight hours at a CMHC in a medically under-served area and/or a placement in an area with a Facility Mental HPSAs score of 16 or above. Additionally, students will have a four-hour placement in an Indiana county jail that deals with justice involved individuals with OUD and SUD. With the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, a virtual placement has been approved for this program.

Student may be given job placement credit if their current employment qualifies.
